I'll usually just hold her and whisper to her over and over that she is safe, except for the rare occasion in which she starts to freak out in which case I immediately let go of her and let her have space so she isn't distressed. She's also not capable of recognizing me or remembering either of our names. But unlike short-term memory loss, it doesn't help to explain to her where she is, because she's still dissociating and can't mentally process the answer. While it's not quite the same thing, my wife has DID, and experiences periodic temporary amnesia.īeyond the more well-known symptoms of the condition, she'll sometimes just randomly severely dissociate and suddenly get really scared and ask where she is all panicked. I watched it a while after this and it was kind of hard to watch. I think 50 first dates had been out but I just hadn't seen it. She also started leaving notes for herself. This mostly all took place over text chat, so there was a log of conversations that made some of this easier I think. Some times she would accept it immediately, other times she would get very mad. There were lots of times when I had to explain to her what was happening. We were in different states and even countries so a lot of the time I was staying up all night until someone else woke up to take over. Myself and another person would basically take shifts to try to make sure she wouldn't be alone. You could just tell from the confusion even if she didn't say anything. Mostly she wouldn't remember the previous day, but when it was at its worse it would happen mid conversation. It was temporary, but lasted quite a while.
